Elanco Tapeworm Dewormer for Cats: Dosage and Safety

StreamlineBy StreamlineJuly 24, 2026No Comments8 Mins Read

Small, rice-like pieces around your cat’s tail or bedding can be an unpleasant surprise. They are often tapeworm segments, not ordinary debris.

Elanco Tapeworm Dewormer for Cats is an over-the-counter oral medication containing praziquantel. It is designed to remove two common feline tapeworms with one correctly measured treatment. However, treating the worms is only half the job. Fleas and rodents must also be controlled, or the cat may quickly become infected again.

At a Glance: Elanco Tapeworm Dewormer for Cats contains 23 mg of praziquantel per tablet. It treats Dipylidium caninum and Taenia taeniaeformis in cats and kittens at least six weeks old. The tablet dose depends on body weight. It may be given directly or crumbled into food, and fasting is not recommended.

What Is Elanco Tapeworm Dewormer for Cats?

The product is an FDA-approved, nonprescription animal drug supplied as three scored tablets. Each tablet contains 23 mg of praziquantel, an antiparasitic medicine used to remove tapeworms.

The tablets treat:

  • Dipylidium caninum, commonly called the flea tapeworm

  • Taenia taeniaeformis, a tapeworm commonly associated with hunting rodents

This product treats tapeworms only. It does not treat roundworms, hookworms, heartworms, fleas, ticks, or other parasites.

That distinction matters when comparing it with another Elanco cat dewormer, such as a broad-spectrum prescription product. A cat with several parasite types may need a different medicine or combination treatment selected by a veterinarian.

How Do Cats Get Tapeworms?

Cats do not usually develop the common flea tapeworm simply by touching infected stool.

A cat becomes infected with Dipylidium caninum after swallowing a flea carrying immature tapeworm larvae. This often happens during normal grooming. Once swallowed, the tapeworm develops inside the cat’s intestine and begins releasing segments.

Cats may encounter fleas even when they remain indoors. Fleas can enter a home on another pet, clothing, furniture, or visiting animals.

Taenia taeniaeformis follows a different route. Cats are typically exposed by hunting and eating infected rodents. Outdoor cats and indoor cats that catch mice may therefore remain at risk even when fleas are well controlled. Elanco advises controlling both fleas and rodents to reduce reinfection.

Signs of Tapeworms in Cats

Many cats with tapeworms do not appear sick. The most obvious sign is often the presence of visible segments.

Fresh segments may move around the cat’s anus or on the surface of fresh stool. Dried segments can look like small grains of rice and may stick to the fur under the tail, around the back legs, or on bedding.

Possible signs may include:

  • Rice-like segments near the anus

  • Segments in fresh stool or bedding

  • Excessive licking around the rear

  • Scooting

  • Fleas or flea dirt

  • Mild digestive upset

  • Poor coat condition

  • Weight loss in heavier infections

These signs are not specific to tapeworms. Scooting may also result from irritated skin, anal gland problems, or other parasites.

Routine fecal tests can miss flea tapeworm infections because eggs may not appear consistently in a standard stool sample. Veterinarians often depend on the owner noticing and describing the segments. A clear photo or sealed sample can help with identification.

Elanco Tapeworm Dewormer for Cats Dosage

Use your cat’s current body weight to select the dose. The official product label provides the following directions:

Cat’s Body Weight

Labeled Dose

4 pounds or less

½ tablet

5 to 11 pounds

1 tablet

More than 11 pounds

1½ tablets

The scored tablet can be divided when a half-tablet dose is required.

Do not estimate your cat’s weight by appearance. A long-haired cat may look larger than its actual body weight, while an overweight cat may require a health review before receiving any medication.

Kittens must be at least six weeks old. The product is not intended for kittens younger than six weeks.

Consult a veterinarian before treating a weak, ill, underweight, elderly, pregnant, nursing, or medically fragile cat. The label specifically advises veterinary consultation before giving the tablets to weak or debilitated animals.

How to Give the Tablet

Elanco Tapeworm Dewormer for Cats may be administered in two ways:

  1. Place the tablet directly into the cat’s mouth.

  2. Crumble the correct dose and mix it with a small amount of food.

Fasting is neither necessary nor recommended. Your cat may eat normally before treatment.

When mixing the medicine with food, use a small portion rather than an entire meal. Watch the cat finish all of it before providing the remaining food. If medication remains in the bowl, you will not know how much the cat received.

For direct administration, place the tablet toward the back of the tongue, gently close the mouth, and allow the cat to swallow. Follow with a small amount of food or water when your veterinarian recommends it.

Do not immediately repeat the full dose if the cat spits out part of the tablet or vomits. Contact your veterinarian or Elanco for guidance because the amount absorbed may be unclear.

How Quickly Does It Work?

Elanco states that one treatment using the recommended dose should remove the common tapeworms covered by the label.

You may not see an entire tapeworm in the litter box after treatment. Praziquantel damages the parasite so it can be broken down and removed through the digestive system.

Visible segments should stop appearing once treatment succeeds and the cat avoids new exposure. If rice-like pieces return within several weeks, reinfection is more likely than a medicine that simply “wore off.”

The official label notes that segments may be seen again within one month when reinfection occurs.

Flea Control Is Essential

Treating the cat without controlling fleas often leads to another Dipylidium caninum infection.

CAPC states that tapeworm treatment must be combined with appropriate flea control because reinfection is likely when infected fleas remain on the pet or in the environment.

A complete flea-control plan may include:

  • Treating every dog and cat with a species-appropriate product

  • Washing pet bedding

  • Vacuuming carpeting and upholstered furniture

  • Cleaning areas where pets sleep

  • Emptying the vacuum container outdoors

  • Following the preventive’s schedule consistently

  • Treating the home when a veterinarian recommends it

Never apply a dog flea product to a cat unless it is specifically labeled for cats. Certain ingredients used safely in dog products can be highly toxic to cats.

The same principle applies when comparing Elanco Tapeworm Dewormer for Dogs with the feline version. Dog and cat tablets have different strengths and dosing instructions. Do not substitute one product for the other based on the brand name alone.

Rodent Control Also Matters

Flea control helps prevent Dipylidium, but it does not address tapeworm exposure from hunting rodents.

Keep cat food in sealed containers, clean dropped food promptly, block rodent entry points, and discourage hunting when possible. Avoid using rodenticides where cats could consume poisoned rodents or access the bait directly.

A cat that continues catching mice may become reinfected even after successful treatment.

Possible Side Effects

The product label reports isolated incidents of salivation or diarrhea following treatment. These reactions were considered non-significant, but persistent symptoms require veterinary advice.

Watch for:

  • Excessive drooling

  • Diarrhea

  • Vomiting

  • Loss of appetite

  • Weakness

  • Unusual hiding

  • Facial swelling

  • Breathing difficulty

  • Poor coordination

Seek urgent veterinary care for collapse, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, trouble breathing, swelling, tremors, or seizures.

Do not give additional dewormers at the same time unless a veterinarian has reviewed the active ingredients. Another product may already contain praziquantel, creating a risk of accidental duplicate treatment.

When to See a Veterinarian

Over-the-counter access does not mean every suspected worm infection should be treated without professional help.

Arrange a veterinary examination when:

  • You are unsure whether the segments are tapeworms

  • The cat is younger than six weeks

  • The cat is weak, dehydrated, or losing weight

  • Vomiting or diarrhea continues

  • Blood appears in the stool

  • The abdomen looks swollen

  • Segments return despite flea control

  • Several pets in the home may be infected

  • The cat has other medical conditions

  • You suspect roundworms or hookworms as well

Tapeworm tablets will not correct every cause of digestive illness or weight loss.

Can Cat Tapeworms Affect People?

People can develop Dipylidium caninum infection after accidentally swallowing an infected flea. Reported human cases occur most often in children. Directly touching the cat or seeing a tapeworm segment does not usually cause infection by itself.

Reduce household risk through reliable flea control, handwashing, regular cleaning, and careful disposal of pet feces. Children should wash their hands after playing with pets and before eating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Elanco Tapeworm Dewormer Treat All Cat Worms?

No. It treats Dipylidium caninum and Taenia taeniaeformis. It does not treat roundworms, hookworms, heartworms, or every other intestinal parasite.

How Many Elanco Tapeworm Tablets Should I Give My Cat?

Cats weighing 4 pounds or less receive half a tablet, cats weighing 5 to 11 pounds receive one tablet, and cats over 11 pounds receive one and a half tablets according to the label.

Can Kittens Take Elanco Tapeworm Dewormer?

The product may be used in kittens at least six weeks old. It is not intended for kittens younger than six weeks.

Should I Give the Treatment With Food?

The tablet may be given directly or crumbled into food. Fasting is not required or recommended. Make sure the cat consumes the entire medicated portion.

Why Did My Cat Get Tapeworms Again?

Reinfection commonly occurs when fleas remain on the cat or in the home. Hunting and eating infected rodents can also cause tapeworm infection. Flea and rodent control must accompany treatment.
