Crispy Buttery Shells with Easy Black Bean Chalupas: ministryofcurry.com

black bean chalupas

Simple black bean chalupas are a constant favourite! They have a no-fry shell and a decadent fast food/takeout vibe. And who can resist a bar where you can customize the toppings? The paratha shell has a soft, supple interior and a crispy exterior. The dish gains a great deal of flavour and texture from the shell, which serves as more than just a vehicle for the spicy beans, crisp vegetables, and creamy sauce. (ministryofcurry.com)

What Are Black Bean Chalupas?

Chalupas are Mexican street food appetizers with a crunchy masa harina dough boat shell. They can carry heartier toppings like beans or meat, or they can be topped simply with salsa, lettuce, and cheese.

The Best Twist on Chalupa Shells

Use Kawan frozen parathas instead of tortillas, pitas, or other flatbreads from India for wraps. They have a soft, chewy interior and a golden, crispy outside that puffs up wonderfully in the pan. They taste buttery and flakey.

The best part is that they cook in just a few minutes right out of the freezer. These homemade chalupa shells are so wonderful that they only need to be quickly turned in the pan and flash-fried in the Air Fryer! We’re hooked—this is a taco game-changer! Make It Your Own

Like these Black Bean Chalupas, we adore simple vegetarian supper ideas that are packed with satisfying plant-based protein. However, you can also customize this amusing rendition of Taco Bell Chalupas. Utilize left-over roasted vegetables or grilled chicken to create an entirely new supper. Enjoy fish tacos? For a lunch that will never be forgotten, stuff chalupa shells with breaded, pan-fried, or grilled white fish, along with fresh salad and Baja sauce!

That Sauce!

This sauce is comparable to the Taco Bell Baja Sauce, which was discontinued, but it’s much more creamy and spicy. Now you can create it at home if you’ve been missing it! Diced jalapenos were omitted; if you want more heat, feel free to add them! You will want to save some of this sauce for later. To make your Air Fryer Potato Wedges and Zucchini Chips even better, try using it as a dip or as a drizzle over nachos. (https://ministryofcurry.com/black-bean-chalupas/)

Step by Step Instructions

Baja sauce: In a bowl, combine all the sauce ingredients and whisk to combine. Store in the fridge until needed (ministryofcurry.com).

Black Bean Filling: In a medium-sized pan with heated oil, sauté onion, red pepper, green pepper, and jalapeño for around five minutes or until the vegetables begin to soften. Stir in beans, taco seasoning, and salt. Mix in the water. Use a potato masher to lightly mash, then garnish with cilantro. Keep the filler aside.

Shells: Place the Kawan paratha in a skillet that has been warmed and covers roughly 80%. Continue with the subsequent paratha. Place both in an air fryer that has been warmed and fold them in half to form a semicircle. Cook for five minutes at 350°F. Using a silicone spatula, carefully remove the crispy air-fried paratha shells.

Assemble: Take one of the folded parathas and place ¼ cup of the bean filling in the centre of it evenly. Top with lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, and onions. After adding one or two teaspoons of sauce, serve.

Storing

Black Bean Chalupas: Make-ahead recipes like black bean chalupas are ideal. Up to five days can pass between premaking the filling and the Baja sauce and refrigerating them.

This is a simple meal prep idea that yields the perfect protein-packed vegetarian quesadilla filling, so always double the filling!
